In the simplest terms, when a nymph starts its' journey to becoming an adult it rises toward the surface, wings begin to emerge as it sheds its nymphal shuck. It reaches the surface, wings bud out and dry and sheds the rest of the shuck. A book could be written on emergers and several have been. Rise forms of the trout can let you know which stage the trout is eating and imitating that particular stage can mean the difference between a fish or two or ten or twenty.
